Bio

Portrait of Mom in Mexico, gouache on paper, Magali Rutschman

I grew up in Socorro, New Mexico and have lived in the southwest most of my life. The state’s diverse topography, geology and history influences my love for creating 3-dimensional art as well as the color palettes I choose. I am steered by my imagination, my underlying joie de vivre and a whole lota tangents.

After decades of making ceramic sculpture and working as a nurse, I went back to school and completed a BFA in sculpture from New Mexico Highlands University.  I used to work primarily in ceramics and large scrap metal, but now I make very small metal sculptures for the body: otherwise known as jewelry.

Being a hunter/gatherer at heart has led me to design and make jewelry with the arbitrary objects I find and have been collecting all my life. For example, “Coiffed Necklace” was made with a vintage hair-pin and in a previous life, “Deco Clip” adorned a woman’s ear in circa 1950. In the last few years I have taken to hiking the old ATSF railroad tracks. Finding broken bits of red, black and white pottery inspired me to create the Fred Harvey Line. I set these pieces in sterling silver.

I have shown in several galleries in New Mexico and am currently showing in Rough Rider Antiques, Las Vegas, NM and at Santa Fe Antiques, Santa Fe, NM.

I am: a mom, a life partner, a slave to my pets, the keeper of friends, a healer, and of course, an artist. Vive la résistance and right back atcha Ché. Siempre.

Painting at top done by my daughter, Magali Rutschman. “Mom in Mexico,” gouache on paper, 8×10, 2011.
